GUILD (MARCH 2010-FEBRUARY 2011)
Another year has flown by and we meet once again to review the past and look forward to the future.
We have had a very varied, entertaining and, dare I say it, educational year. At last year's AGM we were very well entertained by Mrs. Mary Steel who told us some amusing tales from her previous life as Head of Howell's Girls' School.
This year started off with a very interesting witty talk by Mr.Marshall Morris of the RNLI. He illustrated his
talk with slides and we soon realised the importance of this very hardworking charity founded in 1824. An
early example of Mr Cameron's Big Society perhaps?
In April we had a wonderful musical evening and enjoyed the voices of Sioned Terry a teacher at Howell's
and sixth former Tsmaye.
Mrs Kathleen Webb entertained us about the toy industry that once existed on our doorstep in Trefnant.
Some of the toys travelled worldwide not bad for a cottage industry.
Our visit to Craig Bragdy was enjoyed by all and though we could not afford the beautiful tiled swimming pools ourselves, we admired the talent and skills that go into making the tiles. This was followed by a visit to Alafowlia for light refreshments - very important to our group.
The summer weather lived up to the worst expectations for our garden visit to Glog Ddu when a deluge arrived and stayed for the evening. The hardy ones who ventured to the garden were rewarded with a lovely situated mature garden but were still pleased to join the others in The Stag for welcome food and some drying out!
Our Safari Supper had a beautiful evening. Many thanks to the hosts Vi and Elfed, Lucy and Richard and Mary Jones and all others who helped or made food. A wonderful evening of fun and fellowship.
Ruth Moore Williams transported us back to the days of the music hall with her wonderful entertainment "The Good Old Days". We thoroughly enjoyed joining in with some songs and listening to her stories.
In October Mr Ron Edwards showed the film "Life in the Denbigh Infirmary" which brought back memories for many especially our own Doctor Sidney Wilkins.
The Holy Wells of North Wales was the subject of Eirlys Gruffydd's talk. She proved to be a very knowledgeable and enthusiastic speaker. Amazing to think of all these wells with their own speciality and the pilgrims who would have visited them and still do in some cases.
The Forum was the venue for our Christmas dinner which was well attended despite the arctic conditions. The delicious meals were enjoyed by all. Our thanks must go once again to our in-house entertainment team consisting of Joan (sound effects by John), Mary Jones and Gareth for a very enjoyable evening.
Our Devotional evening was ably taken by Mrs. Mary Steel who gave us a new look at the Lord's prayer -we should now think a bit more about what we are reciting and not just say it by rote. It should also perhaps be used as a guide on how to pray.
And so we come full circle back to our AGM for this year.
Our fundraising events this year included a Tea Dance,Treasure Hunt particular thanks to Alex and Mike, Coffee Morning particular thanks to Lesley and Mike, Table Sale which was a new venture, Film Evening enjoyed by those attending. Also thanks to Alex for again running the Webb Ivory catalogue. Thanks to all members and friends for supporting and helping at events. This year the Guild will fund new carpeting for Pat's schoolroom so thank you all for your support.
I have enjoyed my year as Chairperson and this due to the wonderful help and support afforded to me not only by the very hardworking but run-loving committee members who have been brilliant but also by members and friends of our guild who have helped and supported in many ways. Thank you all.
