“We announce to you what we have seen and heard, because we want you also to have fellowship with us. Our fellowship is with God the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We write this to you so that you can be full of joy with us”.
1 John 1:3-4.
ST. THOMAS' CHURCH GUILD
This year started with a metaphorical Bang with a wonderful A.G.M. in February held in the Forum restaurant. Beryl Stanley who had been our faithful treasurer for many years resigned and was thanked for all the hard work and dedication she had given to the guild over many years. Cassie Eden was then confirmed as treasurer for 2009, Mrs Mary Dent as secretary and Mrs Alex Eden as chairman. After the business, Dafydd Wears and his colleague gave us information on the newly formed First Responder team of which they are members, and a donation was given to help with setup costs and equipment.
In March the Reverend Elaine Hodge and a colleague came and explained to us what happens to the money that we as a Guild donate annually to the Mission. Members had the opportunity to ask questions. Afterwards as it was St Patricks' day we had Irish themed refreshments, communal singing of Irish songs and we listening to Mary Jones telling some of her Irish stories.
April was our musical evening and we were entertained by the children from Ysgol Heulfre singing and clog dancing for us. We had a competition for the best homemade Easter hat and the winner by a good head was Elfed Hughes.
In May our speaker had to cancel due to her husbands' illness so Elfed Hughes and Mike Eden offered to bring the Car treasure hunt forward, it finished at the Hawk and Buckle Inn in Lianefydd with an excellent meal, a raffle and a bird quiz.
In June we visited LLanefydd again, when we toured the interesting gardens at Llaeth y Llan. Then we had a buffet, and a talk on yogurt making and its history, followed by sampling the different flavours of the yogurts Llaeth y llan produce, and a tour of the factory.
In July Mrs Man Roberts came and entertained us with her talk about her time spent in Patagonia, her slides were beautiful and fascinating and the evening was much enjoyed by all.
Our annual Safari supper with a twist took place In August. We had starters at the home of Elfed and Vi Hughes In Trefnant, then we went to the home of Margaret and John Barr in St Asaph where we chose from a varied selection of puddings made by various members of the Guild. Finally cheese, biscuits and fruit and coffee and punch were enjoyed at the home of Mary Jones in Denbigh.
A representative from the Air Ambulance came from Wrexham to talk (o us in September, about the work they do. She informed us that they received no funding whatsoever from central government and were still fund-raising for the final two helicopters to bring their fleet up to full strength. A collection was taken and given to them at the meeting.
Dr. Gwyneth Cary visited us in October and told us about her experiences as a female Dr. and her work in London, Africa and in the community in North Wales. Many of the members of the guild had worked for or with the NHS so found the talk fascinating.
In November Mr. Ed Parsons came to give us a slide show and talk about the Brenig Reservoir. It was a very enjoyable and informative evening.
Our Christmas dinner last year was so successful that we decided to ask the ladies from the Denbigh College if they would cater for us again. The meal was excellent, and the entertainment by the Ranters beautifully rounded off a memorable party.
The day after our Christmas Party was our Carols and Mince pies afternoon when a party of children from Ysgol Heulfre with their Headmaster came and sang carols and danced for us. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and we raised £30 for the Air Ambulance.
Janette Roberts our Ministers wife, also a committee member this year, led our devotional meeting in January when she explained to us the meaning of Epiphany.
On the 23rd of January we held a film show in the hall. Following a buffet we watched 'The St Trinians Great Train Robbery'. Thanks go to Brenda and Joan for suggesting a film show and to everyone who helped to prepare the meal.
Thank you to all of you who chose and shared Readings and Prayers with us; to Pat who chose the hymns and played the piano for us and for Introducing to us some beautiful new hymns, and to all who provided refreshments and washed up afterwards, it is your Guild and without all of you it would not exist. Thank you.  Just one more person to thank! Without this Lady who works so hard for the Guild behind the scenes to make sure we have a speaker, or something to entertain us each month the job of chairman would be much harder. So from the bottom of my heart I would like to thank VI for the fabulous job she does for the St Thomas' Guild.
Finally, what with the Birthday lunches and the fellowship, friendship and the support of all the Guild committee and members ! have had a really good year and I hope all our Guild members and friends have enjoyed it too.
Alex Eden
