THE HISTORY OF
ST. THOMAS’S GARDENING CLUB

A meeting was held on the 14th January, 1991, when a proposal by Mrs. Joan Pritchard to form a Gardening Club was accepted.  The following were elected:
Chairman:  Mr. Ken Hatley, Secretary Mrs. Iona Jones, Asst. Secretary Mrs. Pat Duncan.  
The Annual Subscription was fixed at £1.
The first meeting of the Club took place on 11th February, 1991.  Mrs. Barbara Hatley was appointed Treasurer and
Mrs. Joan Pritchard and Mrs. Glenys Parry were elected to serve on the Committee.
During the first twelve months the Club had a number of guest speakers, visited several gardens and had a Members’ Evening.  This set the pattern for the Club for future years.
At the first  AGM on 13th January, 1992, the following were elected:  Chairman: Mr. Ken Hatley, Secretary Mrs. Pat Duncan, Treasurer Mrs. Barbara Hatley.  Committee Members: Mrs Joan Pritchard, Mr. Len Johnson, Miss Ann Griffiths,
Mrs. Glenys Parry and Mrs. Ann Gressley.
The Club held its first Flower and Produce Show on 11th July, 1992.  Mr. Harry Davies was the overall winner.

At the 1993 AGM held on 11th January, the following were elected:  Chairman: Mrs. Iona Jones,
Vice Chair Mrs. Glenys Thomas, Secretary Mrs. Patricia Duncan, Vice Secretary Miss Ann Griffiths,
Treasurer Mrs. Glenys Parry, Committee Members: Mrs. Joan Pritchard, Mrs. Elizabeth Hazelwood and Mr. Len Johnson.
The winners of the 2nd Annual Flower and Produce Show held on 10th July, 1993, were
Mr. Len Johnson (Flowers and Produce) and Mrs. Julie Thomas (Flower Arranging).

At the AGM  held on 10th January, 1994 the following appointments were made:
Chairman Mrs. Glenys Thomas, Vice-Chair Mrs. Nora Roberts, Secretary Miss Ann Griffiths,
Assistant Secretary Mrs. Nancy Roberts, Treasurer Mrs. Glenys Parry, Programme Secretary Mrs. Beryl White.  
Committee Members:  Mr. P. Mulley, Mrs. Barbara Berry, Lily Hazelwood, Joan Pritchard and Cyril White..
The results of the 3rd Annual Flower and Produce Show were:  Flower Arranging Mrs. Glenys Thomas, and Flowers & Produce Mr. Cyril White.   Mr. Harry Davies was the show’s organiser.

At the 1995 AGM held on 9th January the following appointments were made:  Chairman: Mrs. Nora Roberts,
Vice Chair Mr. Pat Mulley.  The Secretary, Assistant Secretary, treasurers, Flower Show Secretary and Programme Secretary were re-appointed.  Committee Members: Mrs. Brookes, Cyril White and Bert Mitchell.
The results of the Flower and Produce Show held on 29th July, 1995 were:  Floral Art – Mrs. Glenys Thomas,
Flower Section – Mrs. Vera Mitchell and Mrs. Lucy Lake equal, Fruit and Vegetables – Mr. Cyril  White.

At the AGM held on 8th January, 1996, the following appointments were made: Chairman – Mr. Pat Mulley,
Vice Chair – Mrs. Joan Pritchard, Secretary – Miss Ann Griffiths, Asst. Secretary – Mrs. Nancy Roberts,
Treasurer – Mrs. Glenys Parry, Asst. Treasurer – Mrs. Glenys Thomas, Press Secretary – Mrs. Beryl White,
Flower Show Secretary – Mr. Harry Davies, Committee Members: Mrs. Marjorie Brookes, Mrs. Eirlys Raine,
Mr. Cyril White and Mrs. Nora Roberts..
At the 1996 Flower and Produce Show held in August the winners were: Floral Art – Mrs. Ruth Owen,
Fruit and Vegetables – Mr. Cyril White..

At the 1997 AGM the following appointments were made:  Chairman – Mr. Cyril White, Vice Chair Mrs. Joan Pritchard, Secretary – Miss Ann Griffiths, Asst. Secretary – Mrs. Nansi Roberts, Treasurer – Mrs. Glenys Parry,
Asst. Treasurer – Mrs. Glenys Thomas, Show secretary – Mr. Harry Davies, Press Secretary – Mrs. Glenys Thomas.  Committee Members: Mrs. Marjorie Brookes and Mr. Brian Jones.
The results of the Flower and Produce Show held in August 1997 were:  Floral Art – Mrs. Ruth Owen, Best Flowers – Mrs. Glenys Parry, Best Vegetables – Mr. Harry Davies.


The 1998 AGM held on 12th January appointed the following: Chairman – Mr. Cyril White, Vice Chair – Mr. Eric Johnson, Secretary – Barbara Salisbury, Asst. Secretary Mrs. Mary Jones, Treasurer – Mrs. Glenys Parry,
Asst. Treasurer – Mrs. Glenys Thomas, Press Secretary – Mrs. Glenys Thomas,
Flower Show Secretary – Mr. Harry Davies.  Committee Members: Brian Jones, Mrs. Nora Roberts,
Mrs. Marjorie Brooks, Miss Ann Griffiths.
On Monday, 6th July, 1998, the Club, at the invitation of Henllan Gardening Club, took part in a recording of the BBC Programme “Gardeners’ Question Time”  The broadcast went out on Radio 4 on 16th and 19th August.
The 1998 Flower and Produce Show was held on 25th July.  Floral Art, Best in Show – Ruth Owen,
Most points – Julie Thomas, Flowers – Mrs. Lesley Freeman, Vegetables – Mr. Cyril White.
